A Look Back Jan. 1st, 2008 @ 10:17 am
 A look back at resolutions....
  • Write for fifteen minutes every day, not including blogs or email.  It must be actual prose, a screenplay, a spec, etc. - Unfortunately, no.  I did not make as much time for this one as I should have.  However, a lot more work came out of me this year than in previous years due to my failed 365 project.
  • Take a yoga class. - No.  I should find a method of exercise this year.
  • Eat three meals a day. - No.  One I should definitely work on.
  • Be able to get up early. - YES! I am able to get up early.  Thanks to The Price Is Right, I was able to be at work at six AM some days.  However, I need to work on doing it consistenly.
  • Get a job. - YES! I'm somewhat back to square one on this one.  I did get two jobs (CBS and B&N) as well as little jobs throughout the year.  I'll be temping at Sony when I get back but I need to find a more permanent job.  We're not on this year's resolutions yet.
  • Get finances in order. - YES! A big yes.  Thank god for that one.
  • Write thank yous before January 3.  - YES! I believe I did accomplish this one.  Yay!
  • Go somewhere new in the United States. - YES!  I went to Joshua Tree National Park and Orange County for a wedding and Easter.  I'm not sure if I went anywhere else.  I might need to work on this one in the upcoming year.
  • Go somewhere new in the world.  - No.  I did not have the cash to leave the country or the time to cross the border into Mexico this year.
  • Stop apologizing so much.  - Hmmm...  This one fluctuated throughout the year.  It still needs work but I'm well on my way.
  • Floss every day.  - No.  Gross to admit it but no.
  • Volunteer somewhere.  - No.  Surviving in LA took priority unfortunately.
  • Do something kind for another human being every day.  Practice random acts of kindness.  - No.  I often hated my fellow human being this year.  I could blame LA on that one but I really should just suck it up.
  • Read part of a book or educational article for fifteen minutes every day. - YES! Every day?  Perhaps not.  However, I more than made up for those days on other days.  My 365 project helped me to read 1984, The Iliad, Running With Scissors, Mythology, A Long Way Gone, The Sound And The Fury, Man Without A Country, Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix, Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince, Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows, Virgin, Life of Pi, Stardust, The Old Man and The Sea, Eat Pray Love, Crime and Punishment, and The Golden Compass.  I am currently still in the middle of Love in The Time of Cholera.  The above list does not include countless children's books I read, poetry (the publication Inch), books I did not finish (The Once and Future King), or books I only read a short selection from (From Neuron to Brain: A Cellular and Molecular Approach to the Function of the Nervous System and The Canterbury Tales).
  • Cut down on your online time and your TV-watching time.  - No.  Not good.
  • Write specs.  Arrested Development and The Office.  - No.  Also, not good.
  • Refurbish screenplays. - No.  Seriously...
  • Make a serious effort in getting an agent.  - No.  I made a serious effort in working at an agency, though.  For the last three, I should have put time into them.  I hate excuses but I feel like I was either working this year or recovering from working.
  • Take an improv class.  - No.  This one will be resolved this year.
  • Sleep under the stars. - No.
  • Remember your secret resolutions. Ooooh.... mystery for next year.  There are three.  Here's a hint - check your gmail account.  - YES! I accomplished the first and the third.
  • Take an art class or draw more often.  - YES!  Thanks to failed 365.
  • Have a more open mind towards life and have fun.  Don't let the little things get you down. - No.  Another I should work on in the upcoming year.

New resolutions to come!

Day 208/365 Aug. 27th, 2007 @ 02:49 pm
soon

Day 207/365 Aug. 26th, 2007 @ 11:59 pm
1. DRAW A PICTURE - A sad puddle.

2. TAKE A PICTURE - Three lights.

3. WRITE A 100 WORDS ENTRY -
He didn’t know the answer. Despite most of the old woman’s beliefs, this one was complete untrue against the reality of the world. Only a few of his kind actually communicated consistently with the lights of the forest. The rest simply saw the tips of the universe’s elbows. If you had never seen an elbow and you saw it for the first time, unattached to a human body, you would probably think of it as strange and maybe interesting. At the least, you would be curious by the strange lump. He had only seen the elbows so, naturally, he lied.

4. LISTEN TO A NEW SONG - Last.fm.

"A Summer Wasting" - Belle And Sebastian.*
"Goodbye To Mother And The Cove" - Clap Your Hands Say Yeah.  Probably heard it before.
"Wash The Day" - TV on The Radio.
"Empty" - Metric.
"Signs & Symbols" - The Archivist.  What a cool band name.
"Monsters" - Band of Horses.

5. READ FOR FIFTEEN MINUTES - I finished Virgin.  Not what I was expecting it to be but a good thesis on the subject.
Other entries
» Day 206/365
1. DRAW A PICTURE - Closed store.  Beanstalk.

2. TAKE A PHOTOGRAPH -

3. WRITE A 100 WORDS ENTRY -

Honey cakes tricked the fairies into stopping for a moment, which allowed the curious humans to pester them for a fortune or a glimpse into the future. Grandmother set a plate of the cakes on the stoop the night the exile appeared. She believed in good strangers and trust in the unknown but she was also pragmatic. If someone requested lodging from her, she would be a welcoming host but she would never place herself or her granddaughter in a dangerous situation without forethought.

She trapped a foolish sprite in the middle of the night. She awoke to him squealing.

4. LISTEN TO A NEW SONG - 103.1 for the first song.  89.9 for the rest.

"Do You Remember Rock N Roll Radio?" - The Ramones.  I never got into these guys.
"The Man Who Sold The World" - Section Quartet.  Essentially David Bowie on strings.  Might not have heard all of it as it was background.
"My Worst Is Yet To Come" - Teddy Thompson.*  Sweet and folksy.
"Modern Trick" - Sarah Borges & The Broken Singles.  Jumpy and fun.
"Red, Red Wine" - Tony Tribe.  Part of it.  I think it's a different version from the regular one.

5. READ FOR FIFTEEN MINUTESVirgin.

» Day 205/365
1. DRAW A PICTURE - Flowers in a vase at a restaurant.

2. TAKE A PHOTOGRAPH - I took a picture of Will for my phone.

3. WRITE A 100 WORDS ENTRY -

The exile knew it was his last glance. Those exiled from the valley were tainted by the outside world and would poison all of those within the valley. Exile was as much a punishment of loneliness as it was a punishment in the knowledge that if you tried to return, you could kill your former brethren. Of course, leaving Stony Loch did not mean he would not meet people of any kind. “Those people” were just ones any citizen of Stony Loch would fear or at least snub. The first of those people he met was Leonard, the sugar salesman.

4. LISTEN TO A NEW SONG - 89.9.

"Ghamgar Bare Ne" - Gaudi & Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.  A nice change from the usual Western crap I hear.
"Jealous" - John Lee Hooker.*  Fun.
"Come On (Let The Good Times Roll)" - Jimi Hendrix.
"Tales Of Las Negras" - Mice Parade.*

5. READ FOR FIFTEEN MINUTES - Virgin.

» Day 204/365
1. DRAW A PICTURE - Tree stump.

2. TAKE A PHOTOGRAPH - Will and I went hiking in Temescal Canyon.

3. WRITE A 100 WORDS ENTRY -

A new list of resolutions…

Do your old list of resolutions. Get up before eleven. Update blog. Forget fear or laziness towards asking people for jobs. Put best foot forward in applying for jobs. Stop thinking too much. Learn a new language. Converse more in Spanish with native speakers. Ask people who know how to do things to teach you – drums, languages, photography, drawing, etc. Ask people for constructive criticism on your work. Produce more writing. One hundred words a day is not enough. Eat more healthfully. Spend time outdoors. Exercise your body, mind and spirit. Keep in touch. Pray.

4. LISTEN TO A NEW SONG - Last.fm.  Honestly, the ones without asterisks (and some with), I just don't remember that well.

"County Fair" - Moldy Peaches.
"Krell Vid-User" - Pavement.
"Daphnia" - Yo La Tengo.*
"Crackerjack Docker" - Prinzhorn Dance School.
"Innoculate The Inrocuous" - The Unicorns.*
"No You're Not" - Spoon.
"I Thought You Were My Boyfriend (Single Edit)" - Magnetic Fields.*  I love this song.  I've heard it before and I'll hear it again.
"The Black Hawk War, Or, How To Demolish An Entire Civilization And
Still Feel Good About Yourself In The Morning, Or, We Apologize For
The Inconvenience But You're Gonna Have To Leave Now, Or, 'I Have
Fought The Big Knives And Will Continue To Fight... "- Sufjan Stevens.  Awesome title.  Probably by the time you're finished saying it, the song is over.
"If You're Feeling Sinister" - Belle and Sebastian.*
"Pure Heat" - The Mountain Goats.
"Wild Is The Wind" - Cat Power.
"Butterscotching Mr. Lynn" - of Montreal.*  Disconnected but fun.
"You Are A Runner And I Am My Father's Son" - Wolf Parade.*  Great ballad to end on.

5. READ FOR FIFTEEN MINUTES - The Once and Future King.

» Day 203/365
1. DRAW A PICTURE - Another anthill.

2. TAKE A PHOTOGRAPH -

3. WRITE A 100 WORDS ENTRY -

Winifred went on a cruise in her early fifties, intent on finding three things: a one-night stand, a gay best friend, and a chance to stand on a glacier. The Caribbean was obviously scratched from her list of places with ports. However, Alaska suited her. She packed up several ski suits, not because she was planning on skiing but because she became cold rather easily. She phoned the neighbors several times until they could no longer avoid her calls and agreed to watch her yapping “rat-dog” as they lovingly called Foo-Foo. Of course, Winifred never saw the alien invasion coming.

4. LISTEN TO A NEW SONG - All over the grid, apparently...
"My Friend" - DC Talk.  I probably heard this on KROQ.  106.7.  Fun but nothing fantastic.
Two French songs on KPFK.
Some song on KRTH.

5. READ FOR FIFTEEN MINUTES - The Once And Future King.

» Day 202/365
1. DRAW A PICTURE - Doodles of sorts on papers from work.

2. TAKE A PHOTOGRAPH - I need a new computer.  Typing the letter "e" should not be this difficult.

3. WRITE A 100 WORDS ENTRY -

“On December 17, 1903, the Wright Brothers conducted the first flight here in the Kill Devil Hills. Orville Wright flew while his brother and several villagers from Kitty Hawk watched.

“Today, I am proud to have you here to watch my first flight. I humbly admit it will not break any barriers. But, I think… well, I think it’s nice to have support from my two best friends.”

Biff starts up his motored model plane and guides it into takeoff.

“Happy Birthday, Biff,” Callie says.

Biff shrugs. “Did you know they couldn’t repeat it at the centennial?”

“No, I didn’t.”

4. LISTEN TO A NEW SONG - Four from 103.1 and four from Last.fm, I believe.

"Home" - Great Northern.  I may have heard it before.
"Spanish Bombs" - The Clash.  Fun.
"Free Time" - Aggrolites.  I'm not that big into reggae.  This one was fun but in a "I'm still not that big into reggae" way.
"Here Comes Everybody" - Autolux. Did i hear this?  I cannot remember it.
"My Tiger, My Heart " - The Boy Least Likely To.*  Cool title, too.
"Pull My Hair" - Bright Eyes.  I don't remember liking this but I'm reaching back.
"Song For Myla Goldberg" - The Decemberists.*  They're usually fun.
"More Adventurous" - Rilo Kiley.*  Pretty. I think.  Reaching back.

5. READ FOR FIFTEEN MINUTES - The Once and Future King.  I read after midnight.  A series of mini failures.  I keep lunging onwards, though.
